Avalanche Activity

Avoid zones below glide cracks

Avalanche danger is moderate. Main problem: gliding snow. Up to summit level glide-snow avalanches can trigger naturally at any time of day, esp. on steep slopes with smooth ground (grass, rocks) in all aspects. Avalanches can grow to medium size. Apart from the gliding snow problem, the danger of falling outweighs that of avalanches.

Snowpack Structure

Stormy winds have done their work on the high-alpine snowpack, lower down the snowpack is thoroughly wet. Up to 2300 m the snowpack surface is riddled with water seepage channels, up to 2700 m there is a surface crust. On Friday night the uppermost layer will freeze and form a crust capable of bearing loads. The ground is warm, thus, the entire snowpack is gliding downhill over smooth surfaces.

Weather Forecast

Only scattered clouds during the night, southerly winds will intensify at high altitudes, elsewhere only light-to-moderate. Foehn-impacted conditions, the sun north of the Alps will shine only through the veil of clouds, which will thicken as the day progresses. Southerly winds will be light-to-moderate. At 2000 m: +1 degree; at 3000 m: -5 degrees. On Sunday night, snowfall above 1000 m (5-15 cm of fresh snow).

Tendency

Minor fresh snow + winds = fresh snowdrifts accumulating
