Kernpunkte

You may find some small wind slabs that may be sensitive to triggering in very isolated areas today. You are most likely to encounter these areas beneath rock outcrops or cliffs where sluffing snow has accumulated. If you encounter stiffer slabs when skiing, riding, or skinning, look around for softer snow to ski or ride or move to lower angled terrain. Exercise normal caution and continue safe travel practices in avalanche terrain despite the low danger rating. 

Avalanche Discussion

Four to six inches of new snow fell overnight on Togwotee Pass with a few inches so far in the Tetons. Winds during the period of snowfall have been very light and will only grow lighter through the day as they back counterclockwise to the northwest. The small amount of water associated with this snowfall combined with the very light wind speeds brings us to the conclusion that avalanches will be unlikely and small. You are most likely to find these in the steepest terrain tucked in beneath cliffs rather than at ridgetops due to the very low wind speeds. Stick to slopes without these slabs and you are likely to find that the near surface facets and light density new snow yield some fine skiing conditions. 

Some faceted snow exists at the base of the snowpack on shaded NW-N-NE-E facing middle and upper elevation slopes. This snow is not only weaker but also has a variable interface with more recent snowfall across the zones. This layer has still produced propagating results at Togwotee on northerly aspects. The possibility exists to find a combination of new snow sluffing onto an isolated area with a weak, faceted snow layer beneath. This combination could produce a n avalanche with the potential to knock off your feet and into rocks and obstacles.  Small avalanches can have bigger consequences in larger and more complex terrain, especially with terrain traps in your runout zone.
