Mount Shasta

Avalanche activity remains unlikely today. Above 9,000 feet, strong to extreme north wind is expected. If ascending above treeline, watch for isolated pockets of wind drifted snow in gullies, rock outcrops, convexities, and mid-slope on leeward facing terrain. Firm surfaces dominate the majority of the forecast area.

For avalanche danger, the primary concern will be isolated wind loaded areas from the powerful wind. With the lack of available soft snow, wind loading will be minimal, but may still exist. Strong wind can often deposit snow low on slopes, and collect around terrain features such as rock outcroppings, gullies, and chutes. Watch for shooting cracks and collapsing as signs of wind loaded snow. Above 12,000 feet, there is some uncertainty of how much loading has occurred, specifically around the Trinity Chutes and the Red Banks. Treat these areas with respect, and assume there will be some amount of unstable snow. 

Today, sunny and clear skies will return to the forecast area, accompanied by a couple changes.

First, temperatures have cooled significantly from previous days. This has surely firmed up the snowpack into an icy block in many areas. With direct sunlight, solar aspects will see some softening through the day, but not by much. 

Second, the northerly wind has returned, bringing 40-50 MPH gusts at 8,000 feet. Above 9,000 feet, wind speeds are forecasted into the extreme range (>38 MPH). Prior to this weekend, there was already a lack of available soft snow. Now, with strong-extreme wind, many surfaces have likely been stripped of all remaining soft snow, leaving only ice and a firm crust. Up high on Mount Shasta, slide-for-life conditions may exist.

Firm conditions are a common factor in accidents on Mount Shasta.  If headed above treeline today, prepare for strong wind, and firm/icy snow surfaces. Take your time moving through these areas, ensure good footing, and prepare to self-arrest if needed.
