Kernpunkte

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist on Togwotee. Poor structure is widespread, and slabs of 1 to 2 feet sit on weak snow. Be conservative around steep, rocky slopes and areas drifted by the wind. Identify creek beds and terrain traps as you ride, and look for sheltered slopes less than 30° for the best and safest riding.

    Weak, faceted snow is widespread at the base of the snowpack. A slab of up to 2+ feet sits on this weak layer, thicker in wind-loaded areas. This problem is most pronounced on west through north through east aspects in areas where the slab is thinner, and you are more likely to impact the weak snow below. Wind-loaded areas hold thicker slabs. Snow from recent storms continues to add a load to the snowpack, and it continues to adjust. Two days ago, a rider observed a small remotely triggered avalanche on a steep rollover. Watch for steep rocky slopes, unsupported convexities, and areas near wind-drifted features. You may not see signs of unstable snow (collapsing and cracking), but I bet you will find weak facets if you dig down. The consequences of triggering an avalanche remain high, particularly around road cuts and creek beds where even small avalanches can bury you.

    Up to 5 inches of snow fell in the last 24 hours with moderate SW winds. 1 to 2-foot thick slabs have formed on lee aspects along ridgelines and exposed cross-loaded terrain features like gulleys and rocky outcrops. These soft slabs will be sensitive to the weight of a rider or snowmobile. Watch for shooting cracks, drifting, and thick pillows. Small wind slab avalanches have the potential to step down to deeper weak layers and create larger avalanches. Seek out sheltered riding to avoid this problem.

Avalanche Discussion

There is a lot of good riding to be had on Togwotee right now. Slopes that are less than 30° and not blown around by the wind will provide great powder riding and the smallest chance of triggering an avalanche. Persistent weak layers like the faceted, weak, sugary snow at the base of the snowpack take time to adjust. Be patient as this happens. Avoid terrain traps like creek beds and road cuts with steep slopes above.
