Kernpunkte

At the mid and upper elevations, slab avalanches can easily be triggered by backcountry skiers and riders today.  Steep terrain should be avoided, especially in areas that show any signs of wind loading.  Avalanches involving the new snow may release naturally as additional snowfall and windy conditions continue throughout the day. The potential to involve deeper layers of snow also persists.  Make conservative terrain choices while the snowpack undergoes another day of rapid change.

    Approximately one foot of new snow has fallen since Friday morning. This snow has been accompanied by very strong winds from the south to southwest with averages above 30 mph  and gusts to 68.  Soft and hard slabs involving this snow can be easily triggered in steep wind loaded avalanche terrain with depths to 18 inches during the morning. These slabs will become more sensitive and larger as they are further loaded by additional snowfall and strong winds today.

    A hard crust formed on December 10th lies 3 to 5 feet below the surface. Although it has become unlikely for a single person to trigger an avalanche involving this layer, the potential can not be completely ruled out. Initiation would possibly occur by finding a particularly thin and weak spot on a slope or from a larger trigger such as cornice fall or a moving wind slab.  If triggered, these slabs have the potential to be very large and destructive hard slab avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

Cooler temperatures have allowed snow to accumulate all the way to the valley floor which is a welcome change from the recent unseasonably warm weather.  Although the snowpack now has many layers that can be identified, there are currently two prominent layers easily identifiable throughout the snowpack above 8000 feet. The deeper one is the hard crust formed on December 10 and buried on the 16th. Many large avalanches, including the Glory Bowl slide involved that layer. It has been 5 days since activity has been reported involving that layer.  On the 24th, significant rain fell again up to an elevation of approximately 9000 feet. Although not as stout as the one from earlier in the month, it is worth noting and monitoring as additional storms load it.
