Kernpunkte

You can trigger small slab avalanches where the wind is drifting slabs of snow. Stick to slopes less than 35 degrees where you see blowing snow and cracks that shoot out from your feet or machine. East winds will increase with light snow and cold temperatures.

    If you find fresh drifts that break easily or crack, steer around pillows and drifts on steep slopes. Even easier, you can stick to slopes less than 35 degrees or choose wind-sheltered terrain.  Looking for plumes of wind transport, stiffer snow, and stiffer snow surfaces will help pinpoint where you can trigger avalanches. Use small, inconsequential test slopes to check how easily the snow slides. You can still trigger avalanches in older drifted slabs from southwest winds (see photo).

    Skiers triggered a slab avalanche (D1.5) at upper elevations on 2/13.  Jim Hill, NE, 6,500ft

skier triggered a 1.5ft deep slab avalanche on a north aspect at 6,500ft on Jim Hill on Tuesday. It ran on the early February crust. Observers have found facets just above the stout crust at similar upper elevations in this zone and more so in the neighboring East Central and East North zones. On Monday, forecasters went to Lichtenberg Mtn and were able to trigger small wet avalanches in the surface snow, especially on southerly slopes and at low elevations. They found one recent wind slab avalanche on a NE aspect, just below a cornice. 

On Sunday, a skier was caught but uninjured in an avalanche on a very steep slope in the Fleur de Lis run outside of Stevens Pass Resort boundary. Observers on Rock Mtn reported moderate southwest winds transporting snow. 

Roughly 8-12” of recent snow sits on the early February crust. The crust formed at the tail end of a major rain event. In some places, you may find a faceted layer just above the crust. The remnants of old wet avalanches and frozen debris can still be found under the snow that has fallen in the past 2 weeks since the rain event.
