Kernpunkte

Wind will begin to move light density snow around on Sunday, building wind drifted snow into slabs.  These slabs will primarily be found in terrain near and above treeline, in open country, and around ridgelines.  Look for clues of recent wind transport such as cornices, ripples in the snow surface, dune-like formations, and hard drum-like snow.  Look for sheltered terrain to find the safest conditions, and avoid traveling on large open slopes >35 degrees.

    As winds increase (primarily from the Southwest) expect to see an increase in wind slab development and distribution, especially near and above treeline.  Use caution around suspect slopes if they appear wind-loaded, as these slabs will rapidly grow in depth and sensitivity in the next 24 hours.  If you start to get into terrain near and above treeline be on the lookout for shooting cracks, upside-down snow, wind ripples on the surface, and the absence of snow in the trees.  Once these clues begin to present themselves it's time to throttle down your terrain selection, and stick to well-anchored slopes and avoid steep convexities and trigger points.  

Avalanche Discussion

Avalanche danger will be on the rise today, as moderate winds with strong gusts infiltrate NE OR.  Moderate wind (17-25 MPH) account for 80% of wind slab formation, and for most of our forecasting zones, that's what we will see on Sunday and into Monday.  Stronger gusts ranging from 40-60 MPH are in Monday's forecast.  Little to no snow is in the forecast for Sunday, but Monday appears to be a very active snow day.  The Blues are on the short end of the forecast at 2 inches, but the Wallowas and Elkhorns could pick up 10-13 inches.  With the already light-density snow available for transport, we are going to see a lot of snow moving around on Monday.
