Kernpunkte

Generally stable conditions exist. Small, Wet Loose avalanches may become possible on sunny slopes as the sun comes out and temperatures rise. Monitor for warming as you travel, and move to shadier terrain if you find wet snow at the surface. Keep in mind that a small avalanche in extreme terrain brings elevated consequences.

The last forecast of the season is planned for Sunday, April 19th. General Avalanche Information bulletins will be updated through the end of April as conditions warrant.

    Overnight temperatures dropped significantly overnight leading to a hard refreeze. It may take longer for frozen surfaces to soften this morning as the sun comes out.   Wet loose avalanches may become possible by midday as this crust softens and surface snow transitions from dry to wet.  Expect areas of concern to expand throughout the day as the sun moves across the sky. Recent avalanches and roller balls will be direct signs of instability. Keep your eyes on the terrain above you and reduce your exposure to steep, rocky slopes in the sun. Move to shadier or gentler terrain as the surface becomes wet and unsupportable.

Avalanche Discussion

Field observations continue to highlight generally favorable skiing and riding conditions, along with typical springtime considerations. Last night's hard refreeze and generally mild weather today will limit the potential for avalanche activity. That being said, it has been an active spring in the Eastern Sierra, and our snowpack is still adapting. There are many areas where surface snow is still transitioning following our most recent storm system. While solar aspects will warm first, wet loose activity may be possible on all aspects today. In addition, it won't be completely impossible to find lingering wind slabs at upper elevations where surface snow remains cold and dry.  

Springtime is here, the days are long, and it is a wonderful time to get out. Consider spring hazards such as open water and creek crossings, patchy coverage, and potential rockfalls or cornice failures when planning your trip. With continued warm daytime highs, it's a good idea to keep a watchful eye on extreme terrain above you during your ingress and egress. Consider specialized tools to manage hard snow surfaces this morning, and expect changing conditions throughout your day.
