Kernpunkte

The avalanche danger will increase from Low this morning to Moderate this afternoon as snow surfaces are weakened by rising temperatures and direct sunlight.  The likelihood of human triggered or natural wet slide activity will increase as this weakening occurs. Mountain enthusiasts are recommended  to recreate early in the day and avoid being in or under steep avalanche terrain during the afternoon. Cornices will also be weak this afternoon and should be avoided.

Temperatures are to be several degrees warmer than yesterday with sunlit areas at 9000' expected to reach the upper forties. Shadier terrain is to have highs in the mid-thirties. Wet slides can start as small loose avalanches and then entrain considerable amounts of snow or trigger wet slab avalanches as they descend the slope. It is recommended to call it a day once signs of wet slide activity become evident.

Avalanche Discussion

The spring diurnal cycle is allowing for freezing of the upper portion of the snowpack at night and then weakening of the snow surface during the day.  Snow conditions are most ideal for skiers and riders as these surfaces soften but before they become so weak that wet slide activity becomes active. While most terrain is going through repeated melt-freeze cycles, cold settled powder can still be found in north facing shaded terrain.  For those venturing into the highest terrain in GTNP, watch for areas where small wind slabs may lurk near ridge crests and summits.
