Kernpunkte

Small avalanches will be possible in wind drifted snow on isolated lee terrain features. These will primarily be on northerly, east, and south east facing slopes. In steep/extreme terrain, small avalanches can cause you to loose your footing and take a fall down the slope.

    Only a few inches of new snow has fallen in the last 24 hours. On Friday blowing snow and very small wind slabs were observed. I expect similar conditions on Saturday. There will belight amounts of snow falling overnight and possibly on Saturday but no significant accumulation. This problem will be isolated to terrain features that seem to catch more blowing snow than other slopes, and will not lead to avalanches that will bury a person. The real danger right now is in steep/extreme terrain, where a small avalanche can cause you to loose your edge and fall. The melt freeze crust under the recent snow/wind slab is very firm; long falls can result if you start sliding. Be aware of the terrain below you and watch for terrain traps such as cliffs and rocks. We have a great reference point to monitor the depth of wind slab.....If you don't observe any wind deposited snow on top of the crust, then the wind slab isn't there.

    Cracking in wind slab on Friday. I found small isolated patches of wind slabs just below ridge tops on east aspects near treeline. The slabs were shallow and up to 6" (15 cm).
