Kernpunkte

A shallow snowpack with poor structure exists in some areas. In terrain where the snowpack is deeper, small to large persistent slab avalanches remain a threat to backcountry travelers on steep, avalanche prone slopes above 7,500 feet. A careful evaluation of the snowpack will be necessary for safe travel in avalanche terrain. Avalanche activity is unlikely below 7,500 feet.

Above 7,500 feet, buried layers of faceted snow reside one to three feet beneath the snow surface. Skiers and riders venturing into steep, avalanche prone terrain still have the potential to trigger persistent slab avalanches failing on these weak layers.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )On Saturday, a minor disturbance will move through the region and bring light snowfall. Overnight lows in the mountains will be near zero before rising into the mid-teens during the day. Westerly ridgetop winds will range from 10 to 20 miles per hour. The general avalanche hazard is expected to remain Moderate above 7,500 feet on Saturday. Up there, persistent slab avalanches with depths of one to three feet remain a threat to backcountry travelers in steep, avalanche prone terrain. Be skeptical of the snowpack. Great skiing and riding can be found on safe, low angle slopes. If you choose to travel into high consequence terrain, expert snowpack evaluation and route finding skills will be mandatory. Avalanche activity is unlikely below 7,500 feet.
