Kernpunkte

Riders or skiers are likely to trigger avalanches today. Conditions are dangerous and demand respect. While some terrain may be stable other slopes may fail. Triggered avalanches may be small, involving recently fallen snow or large, involving weak layers buried earlier in the month. Staying on low angle and low consequence terrain is recommended today as avalanches could be triggered while being on, near, or under steep slopes. Yesterday a person was rescued from Granite Canyon by JHSP, TCSAR, and GTNP Rangers after they were caught by a small but deep slide in Granite Canyon.

The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Warning that will remain in effect until 11 pm Tuesday.

    An additional 18-24" of snow has fallen in Tetons in the last 24 hours bringing the 5 day total to over 5 feet. Avalanches could be triggered  on density changes within this recent snow with depths that that range from one foot to five feet at the upper elevations and to 3 feet at the lower elevations. Winds during this period have been from the south to west-northwest.  Slopes that have obvious signs of wind loading are most suspect  and watch for recent avalanche activity or shooting cracks as warning signs to dangerous conditions. Also be aware of steep areas that are mostly protected from the wind where slabs may also be triggered and behave more like a storm slab problem.

  • Persistent Slabs

    A weak snow layer formed during a dry period was buried on February 6th. Since that time approximately 7 feet of snow has fallen at the upper elevations. Avalanches involving that layer are more likely to occur on the northern half of the compass although other aspects cannot be ruled out.  If triggered they will be large hard slabs with depths that could reach over 6 feet. Although the chance of humans to directly trigger an avalanche on this layer has become unlikely, it remains quite possible for a larger trigger such as an initiated wind slab to step down to the layer.  

Avalanche Discussion

The best way to navigate around both the wind slab and persistent slab hazards is to stay in very conservative terrain until the snowpack has a chance to adjust to the rapid loading of the last several days. It is very uncommon to receive 5 feet of snow containing 5 inches of moisture in 5 days in the Tetons.   Uncommon storms require restraint, even when the stratigraphy and other activity has not been alarming. Before entering avalanche terrain it is strongly suggested to ask yourself and your group, "Why do we think it’s safe". Whether touring under slopes like in Coal Creek or Granite Creek, where others may be above you or evaluating a steep slope, look for intelligent answers to that question.  The answers of "it feels good" or "I haven't heard of much sliding" are not good answers. Observations are limited during major storm events and careful and thoughtful snowpack analysis and risk assessment can help to prevent accidents.  Remember that avalanches will occur today, they could be small to large and can carry the consequence of injury or death.
