Generally safe avalanche conditions exist this morning. By early this afternoon as temperatures rise above freezing, avalanche danger is heightened on south facing terrain steeper than  35 degrees, and all steep terrain below treeline affected by above freezing temperatures. If or when you start seeing red flag warning signs of snow instability it is time to do your recreating on slopes <35 degrees. Red flag warning signs include the observance of roller balls adjacent to and under rocky terrain features. Another obvious red flag is the observance of ankle deep wet/mushy snow on the snow surface and sinking up to one's ankles or deeper in that wet/mushy snow.

    Avalanche conditions generally safe this morning before temperatures start rising above freezing. By early this afternoon sunshine and above freezing temperatures should start warming the snow surface enough to cause the snow to become unstable. If or when we start to observe warning signs that the snow is becoming unstable, it is time to move off of steep, sunny, south facing aspects onto terrain <35 degrees steep. Clues or warning signs that the snow is becoming unstable include the observance of wet mushy surface snow, sinking up to one's boot tops or deeper in wet/mushy surface snow, naturally occurring roller balls adjacent to or directly under rocky terrain features, and rider triggered pinwheels/roller balls or point releases. If and when we start observing these instability red flags, it is time to move onto to terrain less than 35 degrees.

    Cornices are those cool looking overhanging masses of snow we see at and near ridgelines. During periods of prolonged warming, cornices become weakened and or more likely to fail, especially with the weight of a human added. When traveling along ridgelines today be wary of cornices. It is suggested that you stay well back and away from slope edges where cornices exist and keep in mind that cornices tend to break further back from the edge than you might think.
