Kernpunkte

Avalanche danger at all elevations is low today. Hazards such as cornices, tree wells, and other dangers related to a larger than normal snowpack are still present in the backcountry. With winds increasing throughout the day, it is possible that avalanche danger will rise by the later afternoon. As always, just be aware that "low danger" is not the same as "no danger."

This particular hazard is listed more for the fact that this is a 24 hr avalanche forecast. With winds out of the SW-W-NW increasing throughout the day, wind slabs are likely to form at upper elevations in the late afternoon, evening, and overnight tonight. These will be most prevalent on any SE-E-NE facing slopes. Be cautious and maintain your "avalanche-eye" if you find yourself venturing up above treeline.

Avalanche Discussion

Sub-regional differences have been observed by forecasters on different sides of Mount Shasta over the last week. Don't expect conditions from one area to necessarily translate exactly to the next and, as a result, it will be important to watch for any signs of hazard when you're out and about.
