Today, it is unlikely that you will trigger an avalanche in the majority of terrain across the region. Isolated pockets of unstable snow may exist in very steep terrain. Avoid having multiple people on steep slopes and riding near terrain traps that could make the consequences of even a small avalanche worse.

    Weak snow formed in November sits below 2 to 5 feet of snow. Across the vast majority of terrain in Togwotee Pass the likelihood of triggering a slide that breaks into this old snow is unlikely, but not impossible. Very steep slopes that are rocky, convex, and have a shallow snowpack where the weak layer could be impacted are most suspect. Due to the stubborn nature of these slabs, there likely won’t be obvious signs that a slope is unstable. Carefully assess slopes that have any of these characteristics before engaging.

Avalanche Discussion

Currently low density snow is trickling in with 1 to 3 inches having fallen in the last 48 hours. This might be enough to form a tiny wind slab in the highest elevations, but generally won’t affect the avalanche hazard. 

We haven’t seen significant snow since January 9th. This has given the snowpack a chance to adjust and for weak layers in the snow to become generally unreactive. That being said, this is a large forecast region and there can be differences from drainage to drainage. Because of this spatial variability there could be isolated pockets of unstable snow in terrain discussed in the persistent slab problem. Since there aren’t obvious signs to indicate a slope is unstable, the best tool is to use safe travel techniques. Only expose one person at a time to sustained avalanche terrain, avoid terrain traps, and carry rescue gear on your person and practice with it.
