Kernpunkte

On Saturday, small avalanches will be possible on slopes where the wind has blown last week's snow.  These spots occur beneath ridgelines, behind treelines, and along the lava fields.  Keep an eye out for cracking in the surface snow, as well as snow that feels harder and "punchier" than the light, dry snow that most recently fell.

    On Friday, I observed wind blown snow along the obsidian flow (see picture).  The wind slabs that I found were pretty thin and also limited, but I won't rule out avalanches large enough to bury or injure a rider.  We tend to locate Wind Slab avalanches at upper elevations where the wind can blow more freely, but at Newberry Crater we see them below treeline as well because the wind can move a lot of snow along the lava fields and the wind blows freely off the lakes.  Watch for cracking in the surface snow as you travel through it.  Textures like in my picture that indicate either wind scouring, or wind deposited snow are other good clues to look for.

Avalanche Discussion

We received over 7 inches of new snow during the last week at Paulina.  Our snowpack is still pretty shallow (17 inches at our weather station just above the lake).  Nonetheless, the high quality new snow, and cold temperatures were a welcome change this winter.  Hopefully it will last us for the next week; the forecast calls for dry conditions with gradually warming temperatures.  Get out there and enjoy it if you can!
