A winter storm rolled in last night and is bringing heavy snowfall with southwest winds predicted to crank at over 30 mph and gusts into the 50's. Predicted snowfall amounts at elevations above 5,000' range from 9-15" today, and another 6-14" tonight. Snowfall amounts will favor the West and East Cabinets and lesser amounts falling in the Purcell Range. This scenario will leave us with cohesive slabs of storm snow and wind slabs that will be easily triggered in steep terrain, particularly in wind loaded locations near ridgelines. Today is a "no-brainer" when making terrain choices. If you want to stay out of trouble, simply avoid travelling in or below steep and open slopes.
