Avalanche danger is generally low, but it could be locally higher where there are more than a few inches of new snow and winds strong enough to drift it into slabs. Use normal caution in backcountry travel and be ready to change plans based on your own observations. Bypass steep or exposed slopes where you suspect recent wind loading.

    Look out for pockets of fresh slab if traveling in wind-exposed terrain with more than a few inches of new snow. Most slabs out there should be quite small and shallow but still be big enough to take you for a ride if you are not paying attention. You are most likely to find these in the alpine, but don’t let down your guard at mid-elevations as well.

    Blowing and drifting snow can show you which aspects are loading up. If the wind isn’t blowing, look for signs of wind effect like scoured snow surfaces, freshly wind-drifted snow features like mini-cornices, and fat, smooth-looking slabs.

Avalanche Discussion

The trend of cooler temperatures should further reduce the likelihood of cornice fall or glide avalanches. Still, there are plenty of sketchy-looking cornices and glide slabs still hanging on in steep terrain. Minimize the time spent below them.

Snow conditions on Tuesday were described as "manky" and "schmooey" and now are likely turning to crust with lowering temperatures.  An NWAC  Forecaster near White Pass noted that this was the first day that north-facing slopes, even at upper elevations, became moist. They saw rollerballs running in steep due north terrain but didn't see any legitimate wet loose avalanches. They also reported a D2.5 wet avalanche that resulted from a cornice fall on Cos Creek Ridge on an east-facing slope at 6000ft.
