Kernpunkte

Large human-triggered avalanches are possible. Watch for and avoid fresh, stiff wind drifts in the western half of this zone, where more snow has fallen. Near and east of HWY 75, large avalanches breaking on deeply buried weak layers remain a concern.

    Triggering a large persistent slab avalanche is possible today, especially in the eastern areas of the zone where the snowpack is still shallow. The snow and rain over the past 48 hours have added additional load to these slabs while potentially weakening the interfaces with buried weak layers. Observers and professionals around the Wood River Valley continue to report collapsing or whumpfing. These are clear signs that triggering one of these slides remains a real possibility. Persistent Slabs can release in surprising ways and break much wider than expected.

    In the Soldier Mtns, it would take some bad luck to trigger a very large, 2-6 foot thick avalanche on weak layers that formed in January. But, the consequences would be devastating. You're most likely to trigger one of these beasts on very steep, NW-E facing, middle and upper elevation slopes.

    Triggering wind slab avalanches is possible today where moderate and strong winds have blown recent snow into touchy slabs. Look for fresh drifts, rippled-surfaces and slabs below ridgelines, on the sides of cross-loaded gullies, and on aprons at the bottom of steep alpine cirques.  Cracks shooting out from your sled or boards are a clear sign you've found a slab and should stick to gentle terrain to avoid trouble.

    This problem will be most pronounced in the Soldiers today due to the consistent strong W winds blowing over the past 48 hours there.

Avalanche Discussion

The results of the quick-hitting storm over the past 48 hours were less exciting in this southern zone, and the avalanche danger's quick drop back to moderate reflects that. The changes to be aware of are specific to how far east or west you are within this zone:

  • From Dollarhide Summit east through the Wood River Valley, expect that the lingering persistent slab problem is still on the table and possibly has a refreshed ability to be easily triggered if you find deeper pockets of new snow sitting on top of the old slab.
  • From Dollarhide Summit west into the Soldiers, focus on wind-loaded slopes or start zones as areas to avoid. The consistent winds there have redistributed snowfall (of which the Soldiers received more) into wind slabs throughout the terrain that are large enough to bury or injure you.
