Human-triggered avalanches involving dense, hard snow overlying weak layers underneath remain possible in rocky, wind-affected, alpine terrain. Avoiding this type of terrain will dramatically reduce your risk of triggering a large avalanche today. Look for areas where the wind has built small drifts and slabs out of the new snow from the past few days. Small slides that knock you off your feet or machine in rocky, treed terrain can carry high consequences.

The Avalanche Danger will increase overnight as an intense storm brings strong winds and new snow. The White Cloud Mountains are expected to receive the most snow and conditions will be the most dangerous there.

    Dense, 1-4 foot thick slabs of snow rest on top of layers of weak, sugary snow here. You're most likely to find a spot where you could trigger a slide involving these hard slabs in rocky upper elevation terrain where the wind has scoured the snowpack, creating thicker and thinner areas. Here, these weak layers are closer to the surface and impacting them with your weight remains an outside possibility. 

    Fortunately, avoiding this problem is fairly straightforward. You can dramatically reduce your risk of triggering a large avalanche today by avoiding rocky, wind-affected alpine terrain steeper than about 35 degrees. There is quite a bit of terrain that looks like this in the mountains along the eastern rim of this zone—from the White Clouds down south through the Boulders and into the Pioneers. 

    ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION: Small, thin wind slabs are building on a variety of weak surfaces that developed over the past several weeks. Though not large enough to bury you, these slabs can knock you off your feet and carry you downslope. Look for them near ridgelines in terrain exposed to the wind. Dune-shaped drifts and textures on the snow surface like waves and ripples are signs that the wind has been at work, as are fresh cornices along ridgelines. In areas sheltered from the wind, it will be possible to trigger small loose snow avalanches involving the new snow and the weaker facets underneath.

SPATIAL VARIABILITY and CHANGING CONDITIONS

For much of the winter the snowpack picture has been fairly uniform in this zone, but that is beginning to change. Recent storms have favored the northern portion of this zone, from Galena Summit north into the White Cloud mountains. This will be true again with today's light snowfall and with the bigger storm that arrives this afternoon. If the storm arrives late in the day, as forecast, it won't have a significant impact on today's Avalanche Danger. However, if snowfall gets here a bit earlier we may see Avalanche Danger beginning to creep up during the daylight hours. Fortunately, this will be easy for you to recognize and manage in the field. Pay attention to how much new snow is accumulating. If you are seeing more than about 4-6" of new snow you can expect that freshly forming slabs are growing in size and distribution, and are becoming easier to trigger. Look for shooting cracks as an indication that you've found an unstable slab.
