Kernpunkte

This last storm from Tuesday morning into Wednesday morning dropped about 2.5" (or more in some areas) of water mostly in the form of rain in the Blue mountains. This is a huge amount of water weight added to the snowpack in a short period of time. This type of atmospheric river weather event dramatically adds weight to and simultaneously reduces the strength of the snowpack causing avalanches to occur. This was the reason the avalanche warning was issued for Wednesday.Below freezing temperatures last night and this morning will help the snowpack regain strength thereby significantly lowering the avalanche danger.

Temperatures are forecasted to rise above freezing later on today which could make the snow unstable on steep south facing slopes. If you are recreating on or under steep sunny slopes and you observe roller balls on the snow surface it is time to move to different slopes that are north facing, shaded, and less than 35 degrees in steepness. Also, stay on snow that supports your weight or the weight of you and your sled.If you find you are sinking into the snow past your ankles or you are burying your snowmobile it is time to seek shaded low angle north facing slopes .
