Kernpunkte

There is a CONSIDERABLE danger in mid and upper elevation northeast, north and northwest facing slopes that received around a foot of wind drifted snow on Thursday. Human triggered slab avalanches are likely on these slopes. This is a "Catch 22" in that the higher northerly facing terrain is just where we want to go because that is where the most snow is. If you do go into this described terrain, you will be safe if you stay on slopes that are not steeper than 30 degrees and there's nothing steeper above you.

The avalanche danger is LOW in all other areas outside of the higher northerly facing terrain.

After the first two days of backcoutry fieldwork and snowpack assessment, a clear pattern has emerged and I've increased the danger ratings to reflect this. A layer of sugary faceted snow from October storms is acting as a persistent weak under the newest storm snow. Human triggered slab avalanches are likely in the right locations. This problem exists above about 9000' in elevation on northeast, north and northwest facing slopes steeper than 35 degrees.

Snow and Weather

Current Conditions:

Riding conditions are quite good even though we have a shallow early season snowpack. The snowpack is supportable making travel on the snow easy. Overnight temperatures ranged from in the mid 20s along the ridges to the single digits down in the canyon bottoms and drainages. Southwest wind speeds have been increasing a bit.

Mountain Weather

We'll have another pretty nice day today with a good amount of sun and mild temperatures. Southwest wind will probably be a bit blustery along the ridges. The next storm moves through Tuesday night into Wednesday and may bring around 6 inches of snow.

Recent Activity

There was lots of cracking and collapsing of the snowpack on Saturday. This is the same thing that happens when an avalanche releases only these situations were on slopes that were not steep enough to slide. This is bullseye information and is one of the biggest clues to avalanche danger.
