The passing storm deposited highly variable types and amounts of precipitation across the Presidentials with snow showers continuing today. Wind slabs are likely to be smaller in Tuckerman Ravine and other south and south-eastern ravines with the potential for larger wind slabs in the northern part of the range. Extreme winds and blowing snow will challenge effective observations in steep terrain where these slabs may still be growing in size and may remain sensitive to human-triggering. Avalanche danger is MODERATE where these larger wind slabs exist. A long sliding fall hazard exists where they don’t. 

The summer Lionhead Trail is open for travel, but may have wind slabs to deal with on the steep and, currently, icy snowfield near treeline. 

Federal regulations require the use of a face mask on public lands when social distancing is not possible. Please plan to wear a mask in busy areas like the deck and courtyard at Hermit Lake and the floor of Tuckerman Ravine.

Skiing below crossover 5 is poor due to lack of snow, mud and rocks. Cross to the Tuckerman Ravine Trail and walk down when necessary to avoid damaging the ski trail. For safety reasons, please do not ski on the Tuckerman Ravine hiking trail.

    Wind slabs formed in protected areas in the past 24 hours and new snow falling today will contribute to more growth of these slabs. Alpine fetch zones are now snow or ice covered making every bit of snow that falls available for wind transport. Don’t be surprised to find slabs large enough to carry and bury a person. Natural avalanches seem unlikely given the state of the snowpack and spatial distribution of the snow but evaluate snow and terrain carefully before committing to travel into it.

Spring corn conditions are not in the cards today, or likely tomorrow for that matter. New precipitation at Ravine elevations fell as a mix of rain, ice and some snow with only a bit of melting and settlement. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the lower portion of ski trails in our forecast area took a beating from heavy rain. If you are looking for a good day to get out in the mountains to ski or climb or hike to the summit, today isn’t that day. As high pressure moves into the region and the low in the Maritimes moves further away  tomorrow, winds will begin to subside and conditions will moderate with a good weather forecast for Saturday.
