Avalanche Activity

Cold, fresh snowdrifts. Naturally triggered avalanches likely

Avalanche danger in the Dachstein region and Totes Gebirge is HIGH above the treeline. Numerous danger zones in all aspects. Storm winds are transporting the snow massively. A slab can be triggered even by minimum additional loading. In addition, naturally triggered avalanches can be expected. Poor visibility makes assessment difficult on-site.

Snowpack Structure

In the last 24 hours, up to 50 cm of fresh snow has been registered, massively transported by wind. The forecast amounts (50 cm+) lies deposited atop a cold layer of snowdrifts or cold, soft layer. There are weak layers inside the snowpack (faceted crystals beneath melt-freeze crusts). A slab can fracture down to these deeper layers.

Weather Synopsis

Between Dachstein and Totes Gebirge it will snow all day long, focus: Ausseer Land. Widespread on Saturday, 30-40 cm can be expected, more in barrier cloud regions. A strong NW wind is blowing, gusts up to 100 km/hr. At 2000 m: -7 degrees.

Tendency

In northern barrier cloud regions, snowfall will continue, slowly tapering off. On Monday, the situation will relax somewhat.
