Togwotee Pass

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE. Soft surface slabs up to 18 inches deep formed during the past week and older hard slabs up to 30 inches deep lie upon a base of weak faceted snow. These slabs could be triggered by humans who venture onto steep slopes. On some steep slopes these slabs could fail due to the weight of the first person to cross the slope while in other areas a slope may be crossed multiple times before the slab releases. The potential for humans to trigger these slabs will increase as the day warms.

Soft slabs to four feet deep from the newer snow and deeper, hard slabs could be triggered by backcountry travelers in steep areas. Periods of sunshine will put additional stress on the snow and make triggering slides easier. In the Togwotee Pass area and below 7,500 feet in the Tetons the hazard is expected to remain MODERATE. The chance of triggering hard slabs to three feet in depth is becoming more unpredictable.
