You can easily trigger an avalanche in freshly drifted snow at upper elevations on Friday. Look for and avoid drifted snow below ridgelines, steep rollovers, and inside of gully features. The most dangerous slopes face northerly and easterly where wind-drifted snow rests on top of numerous layers of weak snow buried within the snowpack. If you impact one of the deeper weak layers, you may be able to trigger a deep and dangerous avalanche that propagates widely. A small slide in the new snow can be the trigger for a larger, more dangerous avalanche. If you notice cracking or collapsing in the new snow, move to lower-angle wind-sheltered slopes.
