Strong winds and new snow will increase the avalanche hazard in the afternoon. Deep hard slabs could be human triggered in isolated areas with poor snowpack structure. These dangerous slabs are more likely to be triggered by snowmobiles or multiple snowmobiles on the same slope and could be up to six feet in depth.     Deep hard slabs up to six feet in depth could be triggered by humans in isolated areas where weak layers of faceted snow persist near the base of the snowpack. These dangerous slabs could be triggered on slopes that have been crossed multiple times by other riders or skiers. If a member of your party gets stuck on a suspect slope its best to keep all other sleds off of and out from underneath that slope.

    Pockets of surface slab up to two feet in depth could be triggered by backcountry travelers who venture onto very steep slopes and into cliff areas. These slabs have the potential to step down and trigger dangerous deep slab avalanches in areas with poor snowpack structure. These slabs will become more sensitive to human triggers as they become increasingly loaded by the new snow and wind.

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A Pacific trough and associated cold front will advance across Idaho and into our area. Clouds will increase rapidly on Monday with light snow becoming widespread during the morning and increasing in intensity in the afternoon. This precipitation may begin as a mix of rain and snow at the lower elevations. The snowfall will be accompanied by west winds with speeds of 25 to 35 and gust over 50 miles per hour. Temperatures will be in the 20s in the mountains and in the low to mid 30s in the valleys.As the day progresses strong west winds and new snow will begin to create unstable wind slabs and increase the avalanche hazard at the mid and upper elevations. In the Togwotee Pass/Continental Divide and Greys River/Southwest Trails areas some potential may remain for humans to trigger deep hard slab avalanches in isolated areas. Larger triggers such as snowmobiles or multiple snowmobiles on the same slope are more likely to trigger these dangerous slabs which could have depths in excess of six feet. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE.
