The general avalanche hazard at the high elevations is MODERATE today where soft surface slabs could be triggered by backcountry travellers. Strong Southwesterly winds have resulted in these slabs varying in depth from 6" to two feet and they are expected to be most sensitive on very steep slopes where recent warming and sun have created hard, slick crusts. At the mid and low elevations similar, but smaller pockets of slab could be triggered in isolated areas.

There will be another storm system developing Saturday into Sunday but it will mainly affect areas East of the Divide with just scattered snow showers in the Western Mountains with light accumulations if any. Highs in the low teens and light winds are expected.AVALANCHE HAZARD FORECAST FOR THE TETON, TOGWOTEE PASS, AND SOUTHWEST TRAILS AREAS:The hazard is expected to be LOW at all elevations throughout Western Wyoming where generally stable snow exists, but isolated pockets of soft or hard slabs could be triggered in very steep terrain("extreme" ) near ridgetops and cliff edges. Backcountry users are advised to consult area specific forecasts issued every morning as new information may become available and unexpected weather can change conditions.
