Avalanche Activity

The more recent wind slabs represent the main danger.

As a consequence of new snow and a moderate wind from southwesterly directions, wind slabs will form. Even single persons can release avalanches easily, including medium-sized ones. Such avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. In areas bordering France, especially at high altitudes, avalanches can be large. The avalanche danger will already exist in the early morning. Backcountry touring and other off-piste activities call for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger. Saturday: As a consequence of new snow and wind dry avalanches are possible from the second half of the night, even medium-sized ones.

Snowpack Structure

15 to 25 cm of snow will fall until the early morning above approximately 2000 m. In some localities 20 to 30 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, fell on Thursday. Friday: The sometimes strong wind has transported a lot of snow. On Friday on steep slopes several small and medium-sized avalanches were observed. In all aspects snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2000 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. Distinct weak layers exist in the bottom section of the old snowpack in all aspects. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas and at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions a little snow is lying.

Tendency

In particular on the Main Alpine Ridge west of Val Ferret, along the border with France new snow above approximately 900 m. The cold fresh snow as well as the wind slabs represent the main danger.
