Snowpack

On the main Alpine ridge from Monte Rosa to Bernina and to the south of it, precipitation has been falling since Wednesday and will intensify on Friday. There will also be little precipitation in the north during Friday. The snowfall level is around 2800 metres throughout the entire period. The moderate to strong south to southeasterly wind will transport new snow and locally also some loosely bonded old snow.

New snow and drift snow are being deposited above approximately 3000 m on a layered and often already cohesive old snowpack. There will be wintry conditions in the high Alpine regions.

Trend

On Saturday, it will often be cloudy and some precipitation may fall, especially in the south-east, above approximately 2500 metres as snow. On Sunday, it will be mostly sunny in the north and cloudy but probably dry in the south.

Avalanche danger is essentially limited to high Alpine regions and will decrease gradually. There is little expectation of naturally triggered dry avalanches. However, it is still possible for people to trigger avalanches, on the main Alpine ridge from Monte Rosa to Bernina and to the south of it, these occasionally being large. Alpine tours require experience in assessing avalanche danger.
