Kernpunkte

A buried weak layer means large avalanches are possible.

Avoid large open slopes at treeline.

Lawinenprobleme

  • Persistent Slabs

    • Hochgebirge

    • Unterhalb der Waldgrenze
    Wahrscheinlichkeit
    Possible - Likely
    Größe
    1.5–2.5

A weak layer of buried surface hoar and facets is worst at treeline in areas sheltered from previous strong south and west wind. It's unknown at this stage if it exists in the alpine and below treeline.

  • Storm Slabs

    • Hochgebirge
    • Waldgrenze
    • Unterhalb der Waldgrenze
    Wahrscheinlichkeit
    Possible
    Größe

Storm slabs can be triggered by riders, especially where the wind has built deeper deposits.

Confidence

Moderate

  • Uncertainty is due to the fact that persistent slabs are particularly difficult to forecast.

Avalanche Summary

On Friday, there were a few large skier-triggered persistent slabs failing at treeline. It is suspected they both failed on surface hoar and/or sugary facets over a crust buried 30-50 cm deep.

Snowpack Summary

20 to 30 cm of recent snow has been redistributed by strong south and west wind.

This sits on a spotty layer of surface hoar on a crust that is 30 to 50 cm deep.

The base of the snowpack has a few crusts from early in the season that are not currently a concern.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be aware of the potential for large avalanches due to buried surface hoar.
  • Surface hoar distribution is highly variable. Avoid generalizing your observations.
  • Continue to make conservative terrain choices while the storm snow settles and stabilizes.
