Avalanche Activity

GC for 10/1. Poor stability during day in recent windslab mainly on N-E-SE aspects above 850m. Cornices! Moderate hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: During the day there will be a period of poor stability in recent windslab accumulations. These are mainly to be found on North through East to South-East aspects above 850 metres with gullies particularly affected. The older snowpack will remain generally stable. Cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Strong West winds slowly back to South-Easterly and reach gale force during the day, then veer South-Westerly in the afternoon. Light snow showers in the evening are followed by a drier night. During the day heavy showers will soon turn to rain at all elevations. The freezing level will be around 800 metres overnight, rising above the summits during the day. Observed Weather Influences: There were strong West-South-West winds and showers falling as snow above around 600 metres. The freezing level was around 800 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of poorly bonded windslab are present with greatest accumulations in wind sheltered locations on North through East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. Fragile cornices are present above these aspects. The older snowpack is generally well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
