Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation wet snow slides and avalanches are possible.

A clear night will be followed in the early morning by quite favourable conditions. As the day progresses as the moisture increases there will be an increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches. In some places the avalanches can be released in the large-grained old snow and reach medium size. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular on east, south and west facing slopes below approximately 2800 m and in steep rocky terrain. Backcountry tours should be started and concluded early.

Snowpack Structure

Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be quite good. The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften earlier than the day before. The spring-like weather conditions as the day progresses will give rise to increasing moistening of the snowpack. Over a wide area less snow than usual is lying. Adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In very isolated cases weak layers exist in the snowpack on shady slopes.

From the late morning as a consequence of warming there will be an additional increase in the danger of moist and wet avalanches.
