Moderate avalanche danger will be encountered over a wide area.

Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in extremely steep terrain. Even a snow slide can sweep people along and give rise to falls.

Snowpack At heightened altitudes, particularly on the northern flank of the Alps and in the Valais, small easily triggered snowdrift accumulations are being generated adjacent to ridgelines. Beneath the fresh fallen snow from last weekend, a layer containing dust from the Sahara Desert is evident in the Valais and in the Ticino more than anywhere else. In this snowpack zone, a weak layer has been formed in some places, from which isolated avalanches were triggered during the course of the last week. On west-facing, north-facing and east-facing slopes above approximately 2200 m in particular, there are weak layers evident more deeply embedded inside the snow cover. Nevertheless, during the last few weeks hardly any avalanches were reported as triggering from these weakened layers. In central and southern Grisons more than anywhere else, to some extent also in northern Grisons and in the southern Valais however, there are places where the snow is shallow where avalanches can be triggered from these layers. Observed weather review Friday, 07.04.2023 Skies on Thursday night were partly clear in the eastern regions, in the other regions of Switzerland predominantly overcast. During the daytime hours on Friday, skies were overcast in the western regions, and above 1200 m there was snowfall registered. In the eastern regions it was sunny during the morning, in the afternoon skies were overcast but it remained predominantly dry. Fresh snow The following amount of fresh snow were registered above 1800 m:

• Vaud Alps, northern Lower Valais: 10 to 20 cm, in the high alpine regions up to 30 cm from place to place;
• in the remaining regions of Switzerland, only a few centimetres or else it remained dry.

Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between -3 °C in the western regions and 0 °C in the eastern regions. Wind Winds at high altitudes were blowing intermittently at moderate strength from westerly to northwesterly directions, elsewhere winds were blowing predominantly at light strength. Weather forecast through Saturday, 08.04.2023 Skies on Friday night will be partly clear in the western and the southern regions, in the eastern regions skies will be overcast accompanied by a small amount of precipitation. During the daytime hours on Saturday it will be quite sunny in the western and the southern regions, elsewhere skies will be predominantly overcast. Particularly in the eastern sector of the northern flank of the Alps and in northern Grisons, a small amount of precipitation is anticipated. The snowfall level will lie at 1200 m. Fresh snow The following amounts of fresh snow are expected above 1800 m:

• northern Grisons, Liechtenstein: 5 to 15 cm; in the Silvretta as much as 20 cm;
• eastern sector of the northern flank of the Alps, remaining parts of Grisons: 5 cm, as much as 10 cm from place to place;
• in the other regions of Switzerland, less; or else it will remain dry.

Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between -3 °C in the northeastern regions and 0 °C in the western and the southern regions. Wind Winds at heightened altitudes and on the southern flank of the Alps will be blowing intermittently at moderate strength from northerly to northeasterly directions. In the other regions of Switzerland winds are expected to be predominantly light. Outlook through Monday, 10.04.2023 On Saturday night in the eastern regions, a small amount of additional snowfall is anticipated above 1200 m. On Sunday it is expected to be quite sunny in all regions of Switzerland. On Monday it will be sunny to start with. During the course of the day, high-altitude cloudbanks will move in from the northwest. However, it is expected to remain dry. The zero-degree level will ascend incrementally. On Monday it will lie at 2500 m. The danger of dry-snow avalanches is not expected to change significantly. As a consequence of higher daytime temperatures and solar radiation, wet-snow and gliding snow avalanches are possible on Monday in particular.
