Avalanche danger is governed by overnight refreezing and solar radiation. Refrozen or shaded snow remains stable but slippery. Without refreezing or with sun, the snow softens quickly and avalanche danger increases, especially in steep south-facing terrain.

At higher elevations, there are persistent weak layers of faceted crystals that can be triggered by a skier when mild temperatures and solar radiation soften the overlying slabs.

Avalanche Activity

Avalanche danger is governed by overnight refreezing and solar radiation. Refrozen or shaded snow remains stable but slippery. Without refreezing or with sun, the snow softens quickly and avalanche danger increases, especially in steep south-facing terrain. At higher elevations, there are persistent weak layers of faceted crystals that can be triggered by a skier when mild temperatures and solar radiation soften the overlying slabs.

Skredfaren styres av nattefrost og sol. Der snødekket har frosset til, eller skydekke hindrer oppvarming, er forholdene stabile. Samtidig er det økt fare for utglidning. Når nattefrost uteblir eller sola tar, mykner snøen raskt. Da øker skredfaren, særlig i bratte solvendte heng.

Høyt til fjells er status for vedvarende kantkornlag usikker. Mildvær og sol kan mykne opp flakene, slik at en skiløper kan påvirke kantkornlaget.

Snowpack Structure

Snøoverflaten består hovedsakelig av skare eller smelteformer etter lengre mildvær og nattefrost. Der det har vært nattefrost er snøen hard om morgenen, men mykner og tiner raskt i solvendte heng. I nordvendte skyggesider og i høyden er det fastere tørr snø eller tørr skare i overflaten.

Observasjoner fra Middagsfjellet på Hinnøya mandag viser at et nedføyket kantkornlag er lett å påvirke og har evne til bruddforplantning på 800 moh. Utbredelsen vurderes som begrenset til områder med tilstrekkelig snødekke, blant annet på Hinnøya.

Tendency

The avalanche danger is controlled by overnight refreezing and solar radiation. Where the snowpack has refrozen or cloud cover limits warming, the surface is hard and conditions are generally stable, but with increased risk of slipping. Without overnight frost, or when the sun breaks through, the snow softens rapidly and the avalanche danger increases, especially in steep south-facing terrain.

Keep in mind, that the conditons at the highest mountains at Hinnøya may include persistent weak layers high in the snowpack. The distribution is limited, but nevertheless, pay attention to whether there are overlying slabs present and whether these soften during the day. This would increase the likelihood of triggering the faceted layer.
