Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs at elevated altitudes. Moist snow slides and avalanches at low altitude.

5 to 15 cm of snow will fall from the afternoon above approximately 2200 m. This situation will give rise to moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2200 m. At low altitude and on very steep slopes mostly small moist snow slides and avalanches are possible as a consequence of the rain. In addition mostly small wind slabs will form at intermediate and high altitudes in the afternoon. High altitudes: On very steep shady slopes the dry avalanches can be triggered in the large-grained old snow and reach medium size in isolated cases. This applies in particular in case of a large load.

Snowpack Structure

Above approximately 2200 m: The surface of the snowpack will freeze to form a strong crust and will soften later than the day before. The rain will give rise in the afternoon to increasing moistening of the snowpack below approximately 2200 m. High altitudes: Large-grained weak layers exist deep in the old snowpack in particular on very steep northeast, north and northwest facing slopes.

Tendency

The large quantity of fresh snow and the wind slabs that are forming at intermediate and high altitudes will become increasingly prone to triggering.
