Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Shallow accumulations of windslab will develop in wind sheltered locations on North through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. New deposits are expected to be shallow with greatest amounts developing over old snow around gully tops and corrie rims. Old cornice stability will initially be suspect, improving later in the day as the freezing level drops. Old snow will be very firm and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight the freezing level will be well above the summits but will drop around dawn, 1000 metres for most of the day, then 600 metres by the end of this period. Precipitation will fall as rain, turning to light snowfall during the day as it becomes cooler. Winds will be West-South-West during the day, very strong initially but easing throughout. Observed Weather Influences: A cloudy day with no new precipitation observed. Around -3 at 900 metres overnight but 0 degrees by mid afternoon. Winds strengthened throughout the morning from the South-South-West to gale force by afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: The old patchy snow is well frozen and stable. Largest areas are found on higher mountain plateaus and on North-West, through North to East aspects above 850 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low.
