Snowpack Structure

The somewhat older wind slabs are lying on top of a weakly bonded old snowpack in particular on wind-protected west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 2200 m. The old snowpack is faceted. Sunny slopes: The snowpack is faceted and its surface has a crust that is barely capable of bearing a load.

Tendency

Hardly any decrease in avalanche danger. As a consequence of low temperatures the snowpack can not consolidate.

Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger.

The somewhat older wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence in particular on wind-protected west, north and east facing slopes above approximately 2200 m. Avalanches can in isolated cases be released by a single winter sport participant. Mostly they are small. Caution is to be exercised in particular adjacent to ridgelines, as well as in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain. These places are easy to recognise. Isolated whumpfing sounds and shooting cracks when stepping on the snowpack can indicate the danger.
