The avalanche danger today is low. Natural and human-triggered avalanches are unlikely due to a mostly stable and shallow snowpack. Beware of small, generally soft, slabs of wind-drifted snow on isolated terrain features, beneath cliff bands and near upper elevation ridge crests. In extreme terrain, even a small avalanche can carry you somewhere you’d rather not go.Backcountry travelers are urged to use caution and consider the rocks, stumps and downed trees just below the surface of the shallow snowpack. Below 7500 feet, snow depths remain too low for an avalanche rating.Remember that Grand Targhee is closed to uphill travel and skiing or riding while they prepare for opening.

Another clear night and mostly sunny day are in store before the next weather system brings some light snowfall to the mountains on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Overnight lows will be in the teens. Tuesday’s highs will be the 20’s and 30’s at the higher elevations and rise to near 40 in the valleys. Winds will be from the west-southwest at 12 to 25 miles per hour.The snowpack is shallow and mostly stable. The general avalanche hazard at the higher elevation is low. Avalanches are unlikely. Grand Targhee Resort is closed to uphill travel while they prepare their slopes for a Wednesday opening.
