Salt River and Wyoming Ranges

The general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE today. Dangerous slabs exist on a variety of aspects and elevations which overlie a weak faceted snowpack. Yesterday, numerous slab avalanches up to two feet in depth released both naturally and were also artificially triggered by the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and the Wyoming Department of Transportation. Natural slab avalanches are possible and human triggered slab avalanches are probable.

Snow should develop by mid morning and continue through Saturday night with up to 6 inches of light density snow expected. Overnight lows will dip into the single digits and rise into the teens on Saturday. Dangerous slabs have continued to build on a variety of aspects and elevations which overlie an assortment of weak layers and sliding surfaces. While natural avalanches remain a possibility, cooler overnight temperatures and a lull in the snowfall will lead to a stabilizing trend where a trigger is likely needed to initiate a slab avalanche.
