Kernpunkte

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE above an elevation of 9,000 feet and LOW below that elevation. A persistent weak layer of faceted snow that formed during a mid October dry spell exists at the base of the snow pack on northerly and shaded aspects above an elevation of 9,000 feet. This persistent weak layer has been an active bed surface for avalanche activity and should continue to be considered dangerous. Avalanches are unlikely at the mid elevations. Snow cover is sparse or bare at the lower elevations.

Skiers and riders could trigger persistent slabs up to 30 inches in depth on steep, northerly aspects above an elevation of 9,000 feet. These slabs lie upon a base of weak faceted snow. Previous tracks on these slopes may not be an indication of stability.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A weak, upper level disturbance with little moisture will bring a few clouds to the area and a slight chance of snow showers to the higher elevations. Temperatures in the mountains will be in the teens and 20s. Winds will be west-southwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour. The general avalanche hazard remains MODERATE on steep north facing slopes and shaded areas above an elevation of 9,000 feet. Dense slabs up to 30 inches deep lie upon a persistent weak layer of faceted snow and could be triggered by the weight of a single person. Previous tracks may not be an indication of stability on these slopes. At the mid elevations the snowpack is mostly stable and the general avalanche hazard is LOW. Little snow and lots of bare ground exist at the lower elevations.
