Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Recent snow and increasing wind continue to load a weak snowpack. You will likely trigger an avalanche on steep slopes, especially those exposed to the wind. It is possible to trigger an avalanche remotely–from below, above, or to the side of steep slopes. Watch for cracking and collapsing, and be conservative around slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

    A significant amount of new snow over the past several days has been added to a weak snowpack. Consistent westerly winds overnight have continued to build slabs. Winds will continue to increase throughout the day and could gust up to 40 mph by this afternoon in the Snake River Range.  Expect to find drifts 2 to 3 feet thick in middle and upper elevation terrain exposed to the wind. Avoid thick pillows and watch for cracking. Carefully consider the combination of steep and consequential terrain.

    This large avalanche was remotely triggered in Christmas Tree Bowl in a zone bordering the Snake and with a similar snowpack structure on 12/15 on the surface hoar on the old/new interface.

    Slabs may exist on many aspects and elevations. It is possible to trigger an avalanche remotely. The 2 to 3 feet of snow that fell in the Tetons over the last several days is sitting on various weak snow types. This problem is widespread, and any steep slope should be approached cautiously. As temperatures warm today and throughout the week, new snow will continue to settle into a more cohesive slab, but the underlying weak snow remains. Any slope that held snow before this storm is suspect. Use small test slopes, watch for cracking, and listen for collapsing. Dig down and identify where the weak snow exists.

    Around 16-20" of new snow has fallen on a weak interface of older snow in the Snake. Observers noted cracking and widespread collapsing. 

Avalanche Discussion

We are on the tail end of a large storm that has stressed a very weak snowpack. Significant avalanche activity has occurred in the last several days, both natural and human-triggered. Avalanches may break wider than you expect and be unpredictable. Be conservative with decisions around steep slopes today - it will take time for the snowpack to adjust to the new load.

Many obstacles remain hidden just below the snow surface. Rocks, stumps, and logs create a serious hazard for riders and can cause significant trauma. Keep this hazard in mind as you travel today and consider the consequences of an injury in the backcountry. Talk with your partners about contingency plans and what emergency equipment you have in your pack.
