Southwest winds picked up yesterday afternoon leading to another round of wind transport that built fresh slabs on the leeward side of ridgelines. These new slabs will mostly be small in size, but in isolated start zones prone to wind loading by westerly flow large human-triggered slab avalanches may be possible. Wind loading was mostly seen above the treeline, but in isolated areas near the treeline small slabs may exist. Winds decreased overnight and no new loading is expected today. Be alert for signs of instability such as shooting cracks and audible slope collapses. Large drifts, recent cornice growth, hollow upside-down feeling snow, and uneven snow surfaces are all clues that indicate nearby wind slabs. Do your own localized assessments and carefully evaluate terrain features that encourage drifting, such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions. Keep in mind that even a small wind slab avalanche could have higher consequences in extreme terrain.
