Triggering a large avalanche that fails on weak layers buried 2-4 feet deep is possible in very steep terrain today. Wind-loaded slopes at upper elevations are the most dangerous. Avoid this terrain during the heat of the day. Thin coverage exists at middle and low elevations, increasing the chances of injury.

    Weak layers of faceted snow that formed in November sit below recently formed slabs. These slabs are generally 2-4 feet thick. This problem is confined to upper-elevation terrain and shaded aspects at the middle elevations. East through north facing slopes held the weakest snow prior to the recent storms. While the likelihood of triggering is slowly decreasing, there is still a chance that you can trigger a large persistent slab avalanche in very steep (>35deg) upper elevation terrain. Wind loaded slopes will produce the largest and most destructive avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

The slab that was created by last week’s storm is gaining strength and becoming more stubborn, but it still sits on top of weak facets and crusts above 8000’. Warm daytime temperatures and cool nights have reduced the likelihood of impacting buried layers. However, if you are out riding and notice snow surfaces softening during peak warming hours in the afternoon, this could correspond to an increase in likelihood of impacting weak layers under the softening slab. Seek out lower angle slopes if you find these conditions. Careful terrain choices and a thorough assessment of the snowpack structure are recommended.
