Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of new snow and wind there will be a rapid increase in the avalanche danger. Backcountry touring calls for extensive experience and restraint.

As a consequence of, heavy snowfall and the moderate easterly wind, an unfavourable avalanche situation will develop. The fresh wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant. These avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls and in the vicinity of peaks. They are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. Remotely triggered avalanches are possible. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection. Natural avalanches: Numerous medium-sized dry and moist avalanches are possible as a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation. In particular from starting zones at higher altitudes large natural avalanches, capable of reaching a long way in some cases, must be expected in isolated cases.

Snowpack Structure

20 to 50 cm of snow has fallen since Sunday above approximately 1600 m. 30 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until Wednesday above approximately 1600 m. The easterly wind has transported some snow. The fresh snow and the sometimes deep wind slabs are bonding poorly with the old snowpack in all aspects. Towards its surface, the snowpack is favourably layered. A lot of snow is lying at intermediate and high altitudes.

Tendency

Little snow will fall on Thursday. The danger will decrease gradually.
