Avalanche Activity

GC4/1 Very wet PM dry+cool day, surface wet snow instabilities gullies+steep slopes NW-N-E 900 m+ cornices suspect. Moderate Hazard

Forecast Snow Stability: A period of higher instability will occur overnight as heavy rain affects all levels. Cooler, drier conditions by morning will start to re-freeze the wet snowpack at higher levels assisting the consolidation process. Surface wet snow instabilities will exist initially in localised areas such as gullies and North-West through North to East steep slopes above 900 metres, remaining cornices will be suspect. New snow amounts are not expected to be significant. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: It will become progressively wetter and milder later on Tuesday evening and into the night. Drier and cooler conditions are expected on Wednesday with the freezing level around 1000 metres. Light snow showers will affect the higher slopes, winds will be West to South-Westerly fresh. Observed Weather Influences: Snow overnight turned to rain at all levels today as the freezing level rose above the summits, winds have been generally Southerly fresh to strong. ObservedSnowStability: Wet snow instabilities exist in sheltered gullies and on slopes with a North-West through North to Easterly aspect mainly above 850 metres, suspect cornices threaten some of these areas. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
