Avalanche Activity

The fresh snow of last week and the sometimes deep wind slabs represent the main danger. Backcountry touring calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

In all aspects large surface-area wind slabs formed. The wind slabs of last week represent the main danger. These avalanche prone locations are to be found also adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls above approximately 1800 m. They are sometimes covered with new snow and are therefore barely recognisable. Snow sport participants can release avalanches in some places, including medium-sized ones. Maintaining distances between individuals and one-at-a-time descents are recommended. As a consequence of the mostly light northeasterly wind, the snow drift accumulations will increase in size.

Snowpack Structure

In some regions up to 40 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen above approximately 1200 m. As a consequence of snowfall and the strong wind, fresh snow drift accumulations formed during the last few days. In some cases the various wind slabs have bonded poorly with each other and the old snowpack. In particular shady slopes where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are especially precarious. The snowpack will be generally subject to considerable local variations.
