Snowpack Structure

Snowpack

During the night into Monday, large amounts of snow fell in the highest regions of the Swiss Alps, particularly in the Monte Rosa area. In general, the new snow was deposited in the glaciated high mountains above about 3400 m on top of a continuous old snowpack. Avalanches can release extensively there. Below 3400 m, the snow mostly fell on bare ground.

On Tuesday, snowfall is expected mainly along the central parts of the Main Alpine Ridge above around 3000 m.

Tendency

Outlook

On Wednesday and Thursday, conditions will be variable with showers and sunny spells. The snowfall limit will continue to drop and by Thursday will be around 2000 m. Winds in the mountains will be light to moderate from southerly directions. In the high mountains, conditions will remain wintry. The avalanche danger still requires due attention.
