The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE above an elevation of 8,500 feet. Wind slabs exist in very steep terrain and could be triggered by backcountry skiers and riders today. The sensitivity of these slabs will increase today as new snow falls and the possibility for small surface sluffs could develop. Avalanches are generally unlikely below 8500\\\' but could be triggered in isolated pockets where recent snowfall accumulated.

    Wind slabs formed by southwest to northwest winds with depths to two feet exist on steep slopes. These slabs can be triggered by people who venture onto steep slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A slow moving winter storm will bring heavy snowfall to western Wyoming into Wednesday. This storm will bring the most snowfall to areas of the Wind River Range, particularly near and on the east side of the continental divide. The Wyoming and Salt ranges could see a foot of snow from this storm and heavy snow showers are expected to impact the Teton and Togwotee Pass areas as well. On Tuesday mountain temperatures are to reach the upper teens and winds with ten to fifteen mile per hour averages from the northeast to east are expected as the storm impacts the area. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be Moderate above 8500 feet where pockets of recently formed wind slabs could be triggered in very steep, aggressive terrain. These slabs could have depths to two feet. New snow could add to these slab depths and also be sensitive on its own as shallow slabs or as sluffs. Below 8500 feet, the hazard is expected to be Low, where isolated pockets of slab, wet loose slides, and possibly new surface slabs could be triggered in very steep terrain. The avalanche hazard will increase during the day.
