Kernpunkte

Recent snow and wind have made triggering an avalanche up to 18 inches deep possible in steep, wind loaded terrain today. Larger avalanches involving buried weak layers are less likely, but still pose a threat to riders in very steep terrain. Carefully evaluate recent snow for signs of instability and give very steep consequential terrain a wide margin given the potential for deeper avalanches.

    The region has received about 4-6 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. Moderate winds out of southwest have redistributed that snow and formed soft slabs up to 18 inches deep above 8,500’. These slabs may be sensitive to the weight of a rider in very steep, wind loaded terrain. An additional 3-6 inches of snow is possible today with winds increasing and shifting to the northwest. Wind slabs could grow in size and distribution if the region receives the upper end of forecasted amounts.

    A widespread rain crust that formed on Christmas exists across all aspects up to at least 10,000’. Weak snow grains have been identified above and below this crust. This interface is now buried 2-3 feet deep below recent snow. Avalanche activity has been limited on this interface so far, but pit tests have shown the potential for reactivity on the Christmas Crust. Steep terrain should be approached with caution today given the concerning structure in the middle snowpack and the uncertainty in triggering an avalanche at these depths.

    Skier triggered avalanche in steep upper elevation terrain in the Snake River Range on Dec 31. An old wind slab  was triggered that entrained snow as it ran on the xmas crust. The skier was not caught or carried.
